Designing and developing email campaigns present their own challenges, distinct from building web sites.

With web sites, you have a record of which browsers users are viewing your site with, and you can tailor development efforts accordingly. Not so with email. You can't reliably know what your customers and prospects will be using to view your message.

To complicate things further, some email clients use limited-capability rendering engines that means some features you could use in a web site just aren't available with email. Outlook is the biggest culprit here, and Microsoft decided that the same issue will plague Outlook 2010, despite efforts to get them to fix it. So these challenges will remain with us for a while.
